Artist in Residence
For the past 8 weeks local artist educator Kylie Harries, has been working with the 4 year old group at Barefoot Early Childhood. Kylie has been a practicing educator for over 25 years, working from prep to year 12, in rural and city schools across Queensland and Brisbane. Kylie has brought her educator experience and emerging Arts practice to the kindy class in this Artist led project.
The idea behind the collaboration between Barefoot Early Childhood and Artist was to introduce the kindy children to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in a simple, fun and creative way. Together, artist, children and carers have been creating artworks, engaging in conversations, and introducing several Rights of the Child such as to:
be treated fairly
have a say about decisions affecting you
live and grow up healthy
get information that is important to you
be safe, no matter where you are or who you are with
be cared for and have a home
get an education
Collaboration between Centre carers, children and artist around these rights have resulted in the creation of several murals displayed at the Dayboro Day Festival. The children and artist also collaborated on the ‘Paint a Barrel for Reverse Garbage Queensland project’.
